Well - I mean I'm not going to start telling anybody but you or admitting
to anybody but you that I have gone a little soft about exactly one person,
but...
[This required a little careful consideration of phrasing, so she
paused a minute, chewing on her lip.]
I hate the idea that anyone could or might possibly think that I'm
not completely 100% gone on you permanently more than I'm disgruntled that
some people might notice I've gone soft about one person. So maybe less
that I'm totally okay with it but there's an alternative that feels so much
fucking worse.
Hey, as long as I know that's all that matters, right? And I do know. I
know so hard. So don't worry about that.
[Because he didn't want her to feel like she had to prove anything
to anyone else. He knew and as far as he was concerned it didn't matter
what anyone else though. Well, so long as they didn't harass about getting
together with someone else.]
You're right, that's all that truly matters. It just still makes me see red
to even imagine anyone saying this isn't serious and real. I can't help it.
I get that too. If someone said that to me I think it would... almost feel
like it cheapens you? Like they don't understand how amazing you are that
it's impossible NOT to feel this stuff.
[Peter just hated the idea of Arya being angry over something like
that and he wasn't even sure if he could explain why.]
Yeah, exactly. Hell, I could claim it runs in my family. My parents were
like twenty when they got married. And I mean the first couple years were
probably rough, cause of Jon, but they've been the only happy couple at all
those rich dick parties for longer than I've been alive.
Right? I didn't realize how rare it was for AGES and now... my dad's best
friend married the woman he was "supposed to" like my dad did, but they're
miserable, he's had about a million affairs and their kids are awful and
half of society is convinced they aren't his and that's more normal, it's
crazy.
[She didn't think any of that would be real news to Peter, but God
knows Arya can't pass up a chance to brag about somebody she loves.]
Have you ever told them how much you admire and appreciate their
relationship?
[Peter only asked because he wish he had the chance to tell Uncle
Ben that. Or his parents, he assumed they had a great relationship from
what Aunt May said.]
No, I haven't. I mean I do admire it but - I can't wrap my head around the
Jon thing and I think I'd be unable to avoid bringing that up and it would
just be bad.
[It was hard to reconcile, for her. Her parents clearly loved,
trusted, valued each other, but her father had cheated once and her
mother had been awful to Jon, even though it wasn't his fault, and it was
just weird for her to have all three of those facts in her head at the same
time.]
[Peter honestly didn't think about that all that much and he'd never
been able to bring himself to ask about it. Mostly because he just couldn't
picture Arya's dad being unfaithful and like Arya didn't really want to dig
into it.]
We can just take the good stuff we see them do that works for us.
I just... it doesn't fit and I want to understand and I know I'll ask about
it but I also really don't want to ask about it or understand.
[No, she didn't really want to dig into it. She was pretty sure all
her siblings had individually decided to think about it as little as they
possibly could, but, being so close to Jon, it was hard for her to put it
completely out of her mind.]
[Not that her parents couldn't be silly at times but they were
definitely not as silly as Peter and Arya. And that was fine, to each their
own, but Peter liked that about the two of them.]
Fancy dress to all night diners and Halloween costumes on random days and
who knows what else we'll come up with. Oh, Halloween costumes on Christmas
eve, that'd be fun.
Family appropriate ones with the kids, when that time comes - [And
look, it's even getting easier for her to say things like that in person,
she's almost made eye contact] - and the other kind for just us
until then and then after they've gone to bed.
Actually I guess we could just start BOTH this upcoming Christmas.
Uhh, wait, what kind of costumes are you thinking of that aren't family
appropriate?
[Because Peter was doubly interested in that idea now. Obviously
they wouldn't wear those sorts around their family but he was very curious
to know what kind of costumes she meant. Also it got them away from the
"when we have kids" part of that, even though she did well with it.]
Like the one I wore on Halloween. They do make Christmas themed ones. Or
your nurse costume. Or just carefully chosen bits of actually appropriate
costumes, now I think about it.
no subject
Exactly. Softy. It's okay though, cause you want to know a secret?
[She twisted to look him in the eye while she smiled at him.] Extra points if you can guess what the secret is.
no subject
[Peter beamed a smile at her before leaning in to nuzzle his nose against hers.]
You want it so badly too. But that's not much of a secret, not to me.
no subject
Alright, if it was so easy, no extra points.
[She was completely hoping he would guess it, but she still had to tease him a little.]
I'm not actually sure it's a secret to anybody by now. But I'm okay with that.
no subject
Yeah? You are?
[Because he knew that she was still not okay with some of those types of things.]
no subject
Well - I mean I'm not going to start telling anybody but you or admitting to anybody but you that I have gone a little soft about exactly one person, but...
[This required a little careful consideration of phrasing, so she paused a minute, chewing on her lip.]

no subject
Yeah, that - and also like they're underestimating us as a pair or second guessing us. Who are they to get to doubt our commitment?
[That was fair. She didn't feel like she could completely explain why it did make her angry.]
no subject
I get it. Our brains aren't fully formed yet or whatever but... just because it's rare doesn't mean we aren't for real.
[And he wouldn't ever try and stop her from being mad about that because it seemed reasonable.]
Give it some time and we'll be a super awesome story about having met so young.
no subject
Yeah, exactly. Hell, I could claim it runs in my family. My parents were like twenty when they got married. And I mean the first couple years were probably rough, cause of Jon, but they've been the only happy couple at all those rich dick parties for longer than I've been alive.
We're going to have such a great story.
no subject
Your parents are pretty great like that.
[Peter has actually learned a lot about love and relationships just by watching her parents.]
And it’s going to be the best story.
no subject
Right? I didn't realize how rare it was for AGES and now... my dad's best friend married the woman he was "supposed to" like my dad did, but they're miserable, he's had about a million affairs and their kids are awful and half of society is convinced they aren't his and that's more normal, it's crazy.
[She didn't think any of that would be real news to Peter, but God knows Arya can't pass up a chance to brag about somebody she loves.]
Of course it is, it's OURS.
no subject
Have you ever told them how much you admire and appreciate their relationship?
[Peter only asked because he wish he had the chance to tell Uncle Ben that. Or his parents, he assumed they had a great relationship from what Aunt May said.]
All time best story.
no subject
No, I haven't. I mean I do admire it but - I can't wrap my head around the Jon thing and I think I'd be unable to avoid bringing that up and it would just be bad.

Plus we'll do more silly stuff than them.
[Not that her parents couldn't be silly at times but they were definitely not as silly as Peter and Arya. And that was fine, to each their own, but Peter liked that about the two of them.]
no subject
Yes, we will.
[That was a pretty perfect response, in her opinion. A perfect redirection of her train of thought.]
We'll do WAY more silly stuff.
no subject
Like we'll wear weird outfits.
[Peter figured that talking about weird stuff they were going to do was a good transition.]
Or normal outfits in unusual situations.
no subject
Fancy dress to all night diners and Halloween costumes on random days and who knows what else we'll come up with. Oh, Halloween costumes on Christmas eve, that'd be fun.
no subject
Yes! THat should be a family tradition!
Costumes on Christmas Eve
